Annibale CARRACCI (1560-1609): This piece was transferred to canvas from a panel. The story is taken from the Odyssey: Mars and Venus are caught by Vulcan & Venus retires to the isle of Cyprus to be bathed by the Graces. Venus is understood to be a guardian of marriage.
