RUSSIAN Anonymous: Founded 1524 by Vasili III. Walls reconstructed in the 1680s by Sophia. Sophia was imprisoned here by her half-brother Peter I after the Streltsy rebellion. Buildings from left: Preobrazhenskaya (Transfiguration) Church (1687-89); bell tower (1690); Cathedral of the Virgin of Smolensk (1524); Uspenskaya (Assumption) Church (1685-87).
