RUSSIAN Anonymous: St. Petersburg was a planned city developed under Peter I (Peter the Great) beginning in 1703. It is marked by rivers and canals creating several islands. Planners and architects were invited from Italy, Germany, Scandinavia, and France and helped to make it a European-style capital.
