Thomas de THOMON (1754-1813): The column copies the Roman practice of displaying prows of captured enemy ships. Here the prows represent defeated Swedish ships. There are two columns and their gas torches acted as beacons for the original harbor on the Strelka. The statues at the bases signify the four major rivers of Imperial Russia: the Neva, Volga, Dnepr, and Volchov.
