Bartolomeo Francesco RASTRELLI (1700-1771): The Winter Palace was built by Rastrelli (finished 1762). The Alexander Column was designed by August Ricard de Montferrand and was erected in 1834 to commemorate Russia's victory over Napoleon in the War of 1812.
