John TRUMBULL (1756-1843): Painted for the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. The scene is the surrender of British General Burgoyne at Saratoga; New York on 17 October 1777. The central figure is the American General Horatio Gates. All of the figures in the scene are portraits of specific officers.
