ROMAN Anonymous: Device for measuring a Roman mile. There are 400 notches in the wheel on top. Pebbles on the wheel drop down through a hole as the wheel turns. 400 pebble drops equaled 1 roman mile. Vitruvius establised the size of the wheel.
