BYZANTINE Anonymous (c. 500 - c. 2000): St. Sophia was built by Yaroslav of Rus (r. 1019-1054) as the cathedral of Kiev. The apse mosaic shows the Theotokos (Virgin Mary) in an orant position approximately 18 feet high. Below her is the Communion of the Apostles.
