Hearing the City: Evolution of Radio (Updated over a year ago)
A discussion of radio history in San Francisco, part of the CounterPULSE/Shaping San Francisco Talks series, with Chris Carlsson, Joe Lerer (KFRC and KSAN), George Epsilanty (KUSF) and Monkey (PirateCat Radio). An overview of the early days of corporate consolidation of the radio waves, establishment of private ownership and broadcast advertising as part of the creation of a new national audience; then a look at the Auto Row radio days with Don Lee and transmitters on Van Ness, then the infamous underground FM of KSAN, followed by the eruption of college radio at KUSF in 1980, and lastly, today's PirateCat Radio broadcasting at 87.9 and online.
