Dr West on Hippies
KPIX Eyewitness News report from September 22nd 1967 at San Francisco's Commonwealth Club, featuring scenes from a speech about hippies by Dr Louis J. West. He discusses the cultural and stylistic influences on the counter-culture movement in Haight-Ashbury and expresses a belief that the African American community is dismissive of what he characterizes as an almost exclusively white, middle-class phenomenon. He paraphrases one African American community leader, who apparently said: "All we want for our people is what these kids have given up." Note: this news report was assigned the title of "Dr West on hippies" by the KPIX-TV news team on the day it was shot.
