Muhammad Ali on World Heavyweight Crown
About This Item
KRON-TV news footage from June 30th 1967 featuring a press conference by boxer Muhammad Ali, who comments on his former status as World Heavyweight champion. Ali was banned from boxing for three years on June 20th 1967, for refusing the Vietnam Draft. He states: "Well it's up to the people. Boxing is no good if the people don't pay to see it. And the people of America are a little too intelligent to sit and enjoy a match between a bunch of boys that I already annihilated." He goes on to single out Joe Frazier, Jerry Quarry and James Ellis as promising contenders. Please see the 'Muhammad Ali Press Conference' report (KTVU 8), shot by KTVU at the same press conference, in which Ali explains why he changed his name from Cassius Clay.
