When two lesbians bought the Twin Peaks Bar around 1973 they kept the name, but replaced the block glass walls with plate glass windows looking out to the world. At the time no gay bars were "fern bars" and this was a daring act. Never known as a popular cruising bar, Twin Peaks was a social bar and overtime became associated with older gay men. Younger gays often put down Twin Peaks by a number of names: "The Wrinkle Room" "The Glass Coffin," "The Wax Museum" or "Jurassic Park." Twin Peaks is one of the most stable institutions in the Castro, possibly nominated for landmark status.
