The Names Project at 2362 Market Street. The Names Project began in San Francisco as a way to commemorate those who died of AIDS. The panels were the size of a casket and usually had the names and sometimes photos of the deceased. The Names Project here provided material, sewing machines, and help in making a panel. As of 1997, 42,357 panels had been constructed. These panels represented only 12% of the U.S. AIDS deaths. They were stored in a warehouse at 310 Townsend Street until the rents grew so high that they were moved to a warehouse in Atlanta, Georgia.
