Hunters Point Urban Renewal Protest

About This Item

KPIX Eyewitness News report from April 16th 1968 in San Francisco's Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood by Rollin Post, featuring scenes from a protest meeting held by the community against a possible threat to their urban renewal plans. Includes views of this meeting in which Rev. Charles Lee of Ridgepoint Methodist Church declares that: "We no longer will be used as a political football ... We no longer will be used as you see fit to use us. For we're going to stand up and be counted ... We're going to stay here at Hunters Point until you decide to give us some decent housing." Post explains that residents were reacting to a report that the Housing Authority responsible for Bayview's urban renewal wants to sell the property to private speculators. Mayor Joseph Alioto is shown refuting this report and promising that Bayview's urban renewal will proceed as planned.
