Alioto refers to a "riot situation in the Haight Ashbury" and rejects any accusations of "police brutality." Cahill refers to what happened as "regrettable" but defends the police use of tear gas. A member of the press recalls his experience of being arrested during these events, citing "numerous instances of brutality."
