Tom Waddell plaque; As part of the street and sidewalk improvements, a number of plaques of gay pioneers were placed. The requirements to be on a plaque were that you be gay and dead. Tom Waddell was an Olympic winner from the Mexico City Olympics. A woman-friend, also an Olympic winner, started the Gay Olympics in 1980. The US Olympic Committee brought suit and put a lien on his home, which lasted until he died of AIDS in 1987 (his home was on Albion at Camp). The Gay Olympics changed their name to the Gay Games and have occurred every 4 years since. Many in the gay community still hold grudges against the US Olympic committee.
