Black and white photo of the Archbishop's Mansion located at 1000 Fulton Street taken around 1905. History: It was built in 1904 as the residence of Archbishop Riordan, architect was Frank Shea (1860-1929). It is a wood frame building over a steel beam construction. There are 15 rooms making it sort of a Catholic hotel for visiting clergy. In 1906 after the earthquake there was no damage, but a damaged convent moved in temporarily with the archbishop, creating opportunities for jokes. In 1944, archbishop residence moves to the outer Broadway as Alamo Square is no longer fashionable enough. Church retained ownership and converts the building into a working boys home and school (sort of a Catholic reform school). In 1974, the building was sold to Presbyterian Hospital (UCMC), who uses the building as offices and an outpatient psychiatric clinic. In 1983, Jonathan Shannon and Ray Ross buy it and get the okay to turn it into a bed and breakfast. Most of the rooms are named for operas. Don Giovanni suite is the actual bedroom of the archbishop. The photo was copied from Bill von Whalen and Danielle Ducois.
