The first bay window illustrates the simpler color scheme that was replaced by a much more elaborate one. Some Victorian experts say that when there is this much depth in the facades, that and the resulting shadows are sufficient without all these extra colors. This has been compared to taking a very beautiful woman and putting on too much makeup.
