In 1906, Alamo Square was a nearby, unburned neighborhood considered desireable. It attracted many refugees. In the following years, a number of high-rise apartment buildings, usually on corners, were built around Alamo Square. They are all about the same height; although there were no specific height limits, code requirements for taller buildings would have made them too expensive for this neighborhood. This building, 700 Steiner, was built in 1927.
