SFSU students in AFRS 312 at George Washington High School on Feb. 10, 2017. This course, taught by Jacqueline Francis, Ph.D., is under the general heading "Kalifia: The Black Heritage of California"; its subtitle, "Mighty Real: San Francisco Black Bay Area Artists," demonstrates the course's Spring 2017 focus on writing histories of these understudied artists' lives and careers. The pictured students are studying Athletics (1942), a commissioned mural by the San Francisco Bay African-American artist Sargent Claude Johnson (1888-1967), installed on the Washington High School's ball field. Thanks to GWHS Principal Susan Saunders for permitting our visit to GWHS.
