Photograph of "The Guild" service for commencement exercises of San Francisco State Teachers College held at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, California. Founding President Frederic Lister Burk developed the "Ritual of the Teachers' Guild Service" in 1909 as the Normal School’s commencement exercise. In this elaborate ceremony, performed annually for twenty years, white-clad students consecrated their commitment to teaching before entering the profession.
