Grace Hackett (Class of May, 1929) was the earliest know African American student to attend and graduate San Francisco State Teachers College. San Francisco State started as a vocational school for teachers, but it welcomed students that reflected diversity. Grace Hackett of Alameda, California, studied elementary education, and after graduating, taught at Allensworth School, located in a black community located in Tulare County, California, from 1931 to 1935.
