Beta Pi Sigma promoted progressive science at San Francisco State by sponsoring films, field trips, and lectures and membership was open to students with passing grades in at least one science course. Pictured front row left to right: Beatrice Hoyer, G. Mansur, Tom Scholten, Aldo Faralla, Roger Bosquet, George Vavuris, Isabele Schioldager, Dore Gordon; middle row: Lloyd DeRemus, Nick Athanasopulas, John C. Lloyd, George Oberlands, Wasbaer, Robert Tamblin, Paul Douglas, Robert Bowen, William Jones; and back row: Leslie Juette (treasurer), Deane Auspeland, Ed Bryant, Arnold Turner, Gerald Ballou, Arnold Lieu, Roy Ciappini, John Gilland, Bob Scholten, and Frank Gonder. Faculty sponsors included Biology professor Edna M. Fisher, Chemistry professor Gerald Ballou, and Biology professor George Oberlander. Fisher pioneered with her style of instruction when she took small groups of students to do field work at Bixby Canyon (south of Carmel, California) on primitive camp-out field trips in 1948 and 1949 when students helped to collect data for her papers.
