San Francisco State College drew wide acclaim during the 1930s when the first courses in peace studies were offered. The College’s Peace Society was established in February 1941 to keep “America out of War.” This student organization hoped to “assist in bringing about the best possible solution for permanent world peace.” Pictured members include, seated: Carl Gustafson, Mary Ann Chapman, Christine Thomas, Leo Moran, Ray Dasman (president), Herbert Smith, Sherry Auerbach, and Barbara Jensen, and seated: Frank Marcus, James Gittins, David Hamrock, Mario Rodriguez, Earl Barnett, Norbert Nichols, George Vavieris, Peter Mirande, and Wade Brummal.
