Edmund Kemper Arraigned In Santa Cruz

About This Item

KPIX news footage from April 30th 1973 with Pat O'Brien in Santa Cruz featuring brief views of serial killer Edmund Kemper being moved from the Santa Cruz County Courthouse, where he has just been arraigned on charges of murdering 8 women: Mary Ann Pesce; Anita Luchessa; Aiko Koo; Cindy Schall; Rosalind Thorpe; Allison Liu; his mother Clarnell Strandberg and friend Sally Hallett. Also note that Kemper had been previously convicted of murdering his grandparents in 1964, when he was aged 15. Ends with brief scenes from a press conference by District Attorney Peter Chang, who when asked to describe Kemper's motive for these murders states: "He apparently, according to what he [Kemper] says, fantasized about doing this for quite a long period of time. And he states that he never would've been able to act out any of this fantasy if it were not for the fact that there were so many attractive, naive girls hitchhiking in the Bay Area and in this county."
