Interview with Jim Vaszko

About This Item

KRON-TV news footage from November 7th 1967 featuring brief scenes from an interview with the editor of San Francisco State College's Gater student newspaper Jim Vaszko. Vaszko was attacked yesterday in the offices of The Gater, allegedly by members of the Black Student Union (BSU) and states: "I have no idea why they would do something like this. Especially with the very good treatment we've been giving the Black Students Union in the newspaper." Note that arrest warrants relating to this incident were issued by the District Attorney's office on November 9th for Ben Stewart, George Murray and Jack H. Alexis. It should be noted that the BSU nomination for Homecoming Queen referred to by Vaszko in this clip - Evangelina Thomas - did have her photo published in the November 3rd 1967 edition of the Gater, together with 5 other women: Cathy Wolveck (Sigma Chi Delta); Judy Weir (Sigma Pi Sigma); Peggy Hansen (Kappa Phi Delta); Shelley Estrin (Residence Hall Association) and Kathleen Bertalani (Delta Sigma Pi). In that piece, Thomas is quoted as saying: "The students of dark skin are seldom represented in activities here at SF State." Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
