Mural depicting Gartland Apartments fire at Valencia Street and 16th Street. Many thought the Gartland Apartment fire in 1975 or 1976 was arson by the landlord. The fire resulted in 14 people dead and 30 missing. In the previous two months, four other arson fires had occurred on this side of Valencia Street. The owner of the Gartland Apartment, Beatrice Presant of Summit Land Company also owned the Lassen Apartments at 441 Ellis Street, described as among the worst fire traps in the city, having suffered nine arson fires in 23 months in 1973-1975.
