Leroy F. Moore Jr. and Lisa “Tiny” Gray-Garcia: November 1, 2018

After a welcome by Steve Dickison and introductions by Catherine J. Kudlick, Director of the Paul K. Longmore Disabilities Studies Institute, Leroy F. Moore Jr. and Lisa "Tiny" Gray-Garcia begin their performance with a production from their Theater of the Poor, People Skool, a Theater Learning presentation, incorporating a number of skits that lead into monologues from Moore and Gray-Garcia before they transition to reading their works. The duo also incorporate audience participation, quizzing the audience on poverty, homelessness, gentrification, and disability. Gray-Garcia performs a slam poetry autobiographical piece. Moore opens up Black Disabled Art History 101 and reads "I am the Black Kripple." Gray-Garcia reads "I am a Poverty Skolar" from her forthcoming book Poverty Scholar. Moore follows with "Joe Capers Lives on Every August," from Black Disabled Art History 101. Gray-Garcia reads "The Study About Us Without Us" from Criminal of Poverty: Growing up Homeless in America. Moore reads an unpublished poem, "Costa-Hawkins Making Stephen Hawking Holler From the Grave." Gray-Garcia reads "The Colonizer is You" from Poverty Scholarship and "Ode to Papabear," an unpublished poem. Moore introduces his forthcoming book, Krip-Hop Komic, reading "Outside of Hip-Hop Cyphers in the Early 80s." Gray-Garcia ends their performance reading two last poems, "The Cholo Doctor" and "This Poem is in Honor of Homeless Mamas," both of which are unpublished.

After their interactive performance, Moore and Gray-Garcia field questions from the audience. The discussion focuses on ways of infiltrating the education system, whether as teachers, students, or activists; agitating for social justice in the face of systemic criminalization of the poor; recognizing the links between poverty, disability and access; and insisting on the causal relations between capitalism and poverty, gentrification and homelessness.
