Merritt College Election Issues
About This Item
KRON-TV news footage from February 27th 1968 featuring scenes of students and administration being interviewed at Merritt College in Oakland, where alleged threats against student leaders have obliged the acting college president to place student government in abeyance. One student states that after February's disputed student election - to control Merritt College's student government and associated budget of $500,000 per year for it's 9000 students - the administration decided not to let them resolve matters for themselves. Former president Mrs Harriet Smith denies reports that any of this is connected to Bobby Seale and the Black Panther Party and acting president John R. Carr confirms they must take alleged threats against students seriously, which is why they placed the student government in abeyance pending a faculty review.
