Movies often portray scarabs as flesh-eating insects. In fact, the sacred scarab beetle (Kheper aegyptiorum) eats dung! Ancient Egyptians observed these scarabs rolling balls of dung to lay their eggs in and viewed this practice as symbolic of rebirth and the afterlife.
