Women CHP Officers at Graduation Ceremony (1976)
About This Item
KRON-TV news footage from June 18 1976 with reporter Melba Beals featuring scenes from a California Highway Patrol (CHP) graduation ceremony, at which 20 women are becoming officers (out of an original 40 candidates). There are views of Beals interviewing CHP Commissioner Glen Craig (1933-2015) and a new CHP officer, who describes her experience of the physical fitness program. Also includes interviews with Janet Gray and Lydia Flores Engdol, who were two of the first CHP women officers to graduate in 1974. Gray reflects that: "It's hard but at the same time if you apply yourself and if you really want the position, you can get it. It's like any other job: you just have to take it as you go and work for what you want. If it means a lot to you, you'll make it." Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
