Photograph of demolition of the Commons on the San Francisco State campus, circa January-March 1973, to clear the site of SF State campus with crane and heavy equipment to remove debris. The Huts where student organizations were located appears in this image to have been cleared during the Winter Break. The Gallery Lounge that was not on the construction site remained a venue for exhibits and lectures. The Speakers Platform (the first college-sanctioned free speech platform in the nation) is located on the triangular grass section in front of the Gymnasium. The Student Union was completed in October 1975 and named the Cesar Chavez Student Center on May 5, 1994.
