Michael Palmer and Ed Roberson: October 11, 2014

The Poetry Center presents Michael Palmer and Ed Roberson, each offering recent poems in extended readings. They are introduced by Steve Dickison, with Palmer reading first, from the manuscript of his forthcoming book The Laughter of the Sphinx (New Directions, 2016), followed by Roberson, who reads from To See The Earth Before the End of the World (Wesleyan University Press, 2010). The evening takes place at the Unitarian Center, a.k.a. The First Unitarian Universalist Church, on the corner of Franklin Street and Geary Boulevard in San Francisco.

Michael Palmer (00:37:48)

Michael Palmer reads from the manuscript to The Laughter of the Sphinx, which he notes "hopefully will be published some time next year by New Directions." He briefly addressed the "highly performative" and potentially collaborative second section of the book, then turns to read from the start of the book.  

Ed Roberson (00:35:42)

Ed Roberson opens by telling of hearing a pan flute while traveling in Ecuador, and he equates that encounter — "I knew this music... and I knew I was in a strange place" — with first reading Michael Palmer's work. He then tells of living years ago in Alaska, working with ecologist and oceanographer Richard Dugdale, and returning years later to Portage Glacier and learning of its recession, as brief introduction to his reading from the beginning from his book To See The Earth Before the End of the World.
