Bobby Hutton's Funeral (KRON-TV)

KRON-TV news footage from April 12th 1968 with reporter Art Brown featuring scenes from the funeral of Bobby Hutton in Berkeley and Oakland. Hutton was shot to death outside 1218 28th Street in West Oakland on April 6, 1968, after an armed confrontation with Oakland police. Opens with views of mourners gathering at the Ephesian Church of God in Christ in Berkeley with members of the Black Panther Party and Hutton's family in attendance. Followed by a large rally outside the Alameda County Courthouse near Lake Merritt, with crowds listening to speeches by: Warren Wells; Kathleen Cleaver; William Lee Brent; Ron Dellums; Ruth Hagwood; Marlon Brando and Bobby Seale. Hagwood challenges everyone present: "I'm 44 years old and I ain't scared; what you scared about?" She goes on to berate "you white people gathered around. Especially white liberals" directly: "If black people could get rid of racism, we would've gotten rid of it a long time ago! It's your mess, your mess!" This 16mm film reel was kindly donated to the TV Archive by David Webb Peoples in April 2023, who used to work as a film editor for KRON in the 1960s.

This 16mm reversal film print was transferred in 4K (4096 x 2970) using a Lasergraphics ScanStation film scanner, in May 2023. Film shrinkage was measured in May 2023 at 0.20%.
