Catherine Wagner, Dana Ward, Tyrone Williams: October 23, 2014

The Poetry Center presents Catherine Wagner, Dana Ward, and Tyrone Williams reading at Ruth's Table, in the Mission District of San Francisco. Catherine Wagner reads from My New Job (Fence Books, 2009), as well as from various unpublished works. Dana Ward reads from This Can't Be Life (Edge Books, 2012) and The Crisis of Infinite Worlds (Futurepoem, 2013). Tyrone Williams reads excerpts from Washpark, an as-yet-unpublished collaboration with Pat Clifford, and from an unpublished novella from 1984. This special event was organized around the presence of three poets from Cincinatti, Ohio, invited to San Francisco to read their work together for The Poetry Center.

Catherine Wagner (00:25:24)

Catherine Wagner begins by reading two shorter poems from an unpublished manuscript: "Don't Like This," and "Self-Cleaning Pussy," before reading a couple of mesostic poems — "Mike Brown" and "John Crawford" — from a series about "the people of color that keep getting shot." She follows these with more unpublished poems: "Easy,” “50 Lines for Ashley that Rhyme at the Start,” “Not Drunk At All Another Fucking Lyric: A.M. Track Hudson 10,” “Gothic Song,” "The You is Supposed to be You: Extraction Contract,” “We Work from Home,” and “Jane Eyre: An Air for Girls." Wagner finishes with "Roaring Spring," a long poem from My New Job. 

Dana Ward (00:27:15)

Dana Ward opens his reading with "Willows on Fire" from This Can't Be Life, then follows with "Our Song" — titled after a Joe Brainard piece — from The Crisis of Infinite Worlds. Perhaps in response to loud noises outside the room, Ward moves to a piano in the room and plays and sings an original pop song, before returning to the podium to read an unpublished poem, "Namaste," from his notebook. 

Tyrone Williams (00:25:11)

Tyrone Williams opens with an excerpt from Washpark, an unpublished collaboration with his friend Pat Clifford, about Cincinatti's Washington Park and its recent gentrification. He follows with an excerpt from a novella written in 1984, and influenced by Gilbert Sorrentino's Splendide Hôtel. Williams finishes with another excerpt from Washpark, which includes the sections "CDC" and "Benched."
