Edward Dorn: September 19, 1974

The Poetry Center presents Edward Dorn, reading from new poetry. Dorn's reading is in two parts. He begins with a passage from Book IV of Gunslinger, titled "Idling With Observation and Song," which he notes is not exactly as it will appear in Book IV, as the parts of Gunslinger are collected for publication shortly after the date of this reading (Wingbow Press, 1975). He then reads the whole of the book Recollections of Gran Apacheria (Turtle Island Foundation, 1974). This work had just been published, in comic book format with cover and interior art my Michael Myers, with publisher Bob Callahan introducing Dorn, for The Poetry Center at San Francisco State University. 

The original early color video appears to begin in medias res, just prior to the close of Callahan's introduction.

Edward Dorn begins by noting he'll read his new book, Recollections of Gran Apacheria, "which is very much a San Francisco effort," though initially written in Ohio and Southern California. He first reads a passage from Book IV of Gunslinger, "Idling With Observation and Song," after noting that his Collected Poems will also appear soon, thanks to Donald M. Allen in Bolinas.

Following a break, Dorn then introduces at length and reads the whole of Recollections of Gran Apacheria, —with the exception of "Assorted Compliments," a compilation of contemporary characterizations of the Apache by U.S. military officers and others, which he remarks on and notes he won't read.
