SF Giants opener (1979)

About This Item

KPIX-TV news footage from April 10, 1979 with reporter Don Knapp featuring scenes from the San Francisco Giants opening game of the season at Candlestick Park against the San Diego Padres. Includes views of the opening ceremony, of the game, of fans enjoying themselves (and getting arrested) and of Christopher and Jonathan Moscone throwing the opening pitches in honor of their late father Mayor George Moscone. There are also several interviews with optimistic Giants fans, including Marge Wallace (aka Ballpark Marge). The Giants eventually won this opening series 4-2. Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.

Thanks to David Gallagher for positively identifying Ballpark Marge, who is seen being interviewed from 1:53-1:58 in this clip.

This 16mm color reversal film print was scanned in 4K (4096 x 2970) using a Lasergraphics ScanStation film scanner, in April 2024.
