Hataałii and Colectivo CalleSon: February 22, 2024

The Poetry Center presents singer/songwriter Hataałii (a.k.a Hataałiinez Wheeler) joining us from Albuquerque, New Mexico (Window Rock, Arizona, capitol of the Navajo Nation, is his hometown), for his first ever Bay Area appearance. San Francisco Bay Area-based banda Colectivo CalleSon, practitioners of son jarocho, open this evening of live music performance at Medicine for Nightmares bookstore y galeria, in San Francisco's Mission district. The second of two dates on this visit, earlier the same day Hataałii read his poems alongside former San Francisco Poet Laureate Kim Shuck at The Poetry Center. Program supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Colectivo CalleSon (00:45:08)

Colectivo CalleSon opens the evening with a generous set of sones jarochos, drawing on the Afro-Indigenous music form based in Veracruz, Mexico, and adapted to the contemporary urban situation. From the collective of "almost twenty people," musicians Jose Ramon Luna Arriaga, Tanya Benitez, Mike Gubman, Angel Olin Juarez, Luancho, and Angel Rodriguez (who also, with the others, introduces the band, its instruments, and their musical practice) perform on traditional stringed instruments, voice, and percussion, a set of traditional sones: "and we do them a little bit different."

Hataałii (00:25:41)

Remarking that he's "going to mellow the night out," Hataałii performs a set of original songs. Playing a small-scale acoustic guitar, he draws from his several albums, remarking at the outset that these are songs "that I made in my dorm room when I was seventeen years old."

From his set list, indelibly-markered just before the show to the side of his guitar, he sings: "Brown Fool Eyes," "Land of Poor Chance," "Alex Jones," "Burn," "All We Need," "Ballad of Athabaskan Merry," and "Story of Francisco," closing with "Lover Call."
