Barbara Tomash and Donna de la Perrière: November 13, 2014

The Poetry Center presents Barbara Tomash and Donna de la Perrière, both at the time adjunct professors in Creative Writing at SF State. Tomash reads a selection of poems from Arboreal (Apogee Press, 2014) along with new work, and de la Perrière reads from her books Saint Erasure (2010), True Crime (2009), and Works of Love and Terror (2019, all from Talisman House). Steve Dickison introduces the poets, who following their readings respond to questions from their audience. 

Note: the final two-thirds of the event were recorded via audio only, at the election of the second poet and concurrence of the first. The quality of this digital video from Fall 2014 is compromised due to the loss of master-files from failure of a 'failsafe' set of mirrored hard-drives; fortunately, a compressed video file could be retrieved from DVD backup.

Barbara Tomash (00:27:50)

Barbara Tomash reads new work, incorporating phrases from French, including among others the poems "Mist," "Calm," "Call," and "Acro." She then reads poems "Against the Glass," "Relict," "The Stars at Night," and "Arboreal" from her book of prose poetry, Arboreal.

Donna de la Perrière (00:23:52)

Donna de la Perrière reads poetry from her books Saint Erasure, True Crime, and Works of Love and Terror. From Saint Erasure, she reads "The Glass Delusion" and "The World is Everything That is the Case." From True Crime, she reads "Risen." Finally, from Works of Love and Terror, she reads "First Love."

Conversation (00:36:49)

Barbara Tomash and Donna de la Perrière converse with one another and answer questions from the audience. Topics include the functionality of "memory and variation," their inspiration for writing as a whole, and the "layers of artmaking."
