John Paul Leonard (1901–1995), president of San Francisco State College from 1945 to 1957, is often remembered as the “Builder President.” He led the college’s transition to the Lake Merced campus and oversaw major expansion in programs and enrollment during the post–World War II era, fueled in part by the G.I. Bill. In recognition of his leadership, the campus library was dedicated in his name in 1977.
