President and Mrs. John Summerskill (front right), Dr. Daniel Feder (front left) and Some OthersJohn Henry Summerskill, (1925-1990): SFSC President September 1966-February 1968. BA McGill, University; Ph.D. Clinical Psychology, University of Pennsylvania. Resigned. The first of the San Francisco State Presidents during the stormy part of the 1960s, John Summerskill took office as President in Fall, 1966. Born in Montreal, Canada, in 1925, he received his B.A. degree at McGill University and his Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. From 1951-1958, he was the Director of the Sloan Institute of Hospital Administration, and Professor of Administration in the Graduate School of Business and Public Administration, Cornell University. From 11958-1964, he was Vice President for Student Affairs at Cornell University. President Summerskill took office in September, 1966, and announced in February, 1968 that he would be leaving the College. In May, 1968, during a series of campus disruptions, his earlier resignation was accepted, and he left for Addis Abbaba, Ethiopia, as a member of a Ford Foundation project. He died June 15, 1990. Daniel Feder was born in Philadelphia and moved to Denver at age three. He graduated from East Denver High School in 1928 and earned his A.B. and A.M. degrees in Psychology from the University of Denver. He completed his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology at the University of Iowa in 1934. Feder held various academic and administrative roles at the University of Iowa and the University of Illinois before serving in World War II as a Lieutenant Commander.After the war, he worked at the University of Denver from 1946 to 1961 as Dean of Students and Professor of Psychology. He later joined San Francisco State University to chair the Division of Psychology and serve as a Professor at San Francisco State University until 1963, when he was named Dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences for a year. Dean of Academic Planning at San Francisco for the next nine years, he took the position of Dean of Faculty Affairs when it was created in the fall of 1973 and occupied that position until his retirement in 1975.

President Paul Dodd named Feder as Dean of Academic Planning in 1964 so he was in that position during the 1968-1969 student-led strike for ethnic studies.
