Edward BURNE-JONES (1833-1898): Legend of King Acrisius of Argos. The oracle foretold that he would be slain by the son of his daughter Danae. He put her in a tower where she was visited and impregnated by Zeus in the form of a shower of gold. Perseus the baby was thrown into the sea but rescued and returned as an adult to kill his father by accident throwing a discus. Morris tells the tale in his Earthly Paradise. The model is Maria Zambaco's cousin Marie Spartali. Other versions exist in the Ashmolean Oxford and the Fogg Harvard museums.
