NETHERLANDISH RENAISSANCE Anonymous (1420-1550): Charles became King of Spain in 1516 and Holy roman Emperor in 1519. His immense empire included spain and its colonies, the Lowlands, Austria and pats of Italy. He abdicated in 1555 and retired to a monastery. He is shown here as a youth.
