During the early-1970s, SF State ranked just below UCLA, UCB, and USC in enrollment; in terms of graduate students, it ranked just below USC, UCB, UCLA, and Stanford; it led in diversity of B.A. and M.A. programs by offering 102 degree programs; in 1971-1972 SF State had six nationally accredited programs (surpassed by only five of the 22 California universities); and approximately 65 percent of the full-time faculty held doctorates. SF State qualified as a “university” campus under all the proposed criteria. San Francisco State College became California State University, San Francisco on Commencement Day on June 1, 1972.
