Basement corridor of San Francisco State College’s former campus at Buchanan and Haight Streets, photographed in the 1950s, prior to the university’s move to the Lake Merced campus. Rows of mailboxes or lockers line both walls, with desks and chairs arranged along the corridor. Several individuals stand and converse in the background while a woman walks past in the foreground. Overhead industrial lighting and exposed ductwork contribute to the utilitarian character typical of mid-century campus facilities.

Context

The old San Francisco State College campus at Haight & Buchanan Street operated from the early 20th century through 1952. As enrollment rapidly grew in the 1930s, the campus became overcrowded and a search for a larger location began. Classes officially moved to to the 19th Avenue location in 1953.
