Health and Social Sciences Building (HSS)

About This Item

The Health and Social Sciences (HSS) Building at San Francisco State University, shown with students moving through the courtyard and study areas outside. Originally completed in 1958 as the Humanities and Social Sciences Building, the structure was designed by Anson Boyd and Carl C. McElvy in collaboration with the California Division of Architecture. An additional north wing was completed in 1965. The building’s long horizontal window bands, projecting awnings, and open-air walkways reflect the clean-lined modernist campus design of the mid-20th century.
