The Co-op at the SF State College on Buchanan and Haight Streets, November 1950

About This Item

The Co-operative Store operated by the student body and managed by Mr. and Mrs. Marples was located on the first floor of College Hall. It was a bookstore with new and second-hand textbooks for all courses with a second-hand textbook service. Students could purchase magazines, art supplies, gym clothes and rent musical instruments. There was a well-equipped soda fountain, and students could get cold or hot drinks. Student mailboxes were available and could purchase tickets for campus events. The Co-op also had a novelty counter with pennants, paper weights, stationary, rings, pins, and other college jewelry. [Source: 1932-1933 Student Handbook].

Context

As enrollment rapidly grew in the 1930s, the campus became overcrowded and a search for a larger location began. Classes officially moved to to the 19th Avenue location in 1953.
