Burk Hall at San Francisco State University

Burk Hall at San Francisco State University, originally made up of two buildings, form one of the campus’s characteristic courtyard-style spaces. Built in the post-war decades, many SF State structures from this period feature simple, functional modernist lines—horizontal bands of windows, clean façades, and practical layouts designed to support a rapidly growing student population. In the foreground, flowering shrubs, trees, and open lawn reflect the university’s long-standing effort to integrate landscaped green areas into its academic core, giving students shaded outdoor places to study, meet, and move between classes.
