Blanche Drury: Professor of Physical Education

Blanche Jessen Drury. 1945. Professor of Physical Education. BA (1942) San Francisco State University; Registered Physical Therapist (1945); MA (1950) and Ed.D. (1952) Stanford University. In 1957, Drury taught everything except for swimming and developed the first physical therapy curriculum at SF State. She worked with student teachers at the Frederic Burk School, and wrote several books, including Muscles in Action (1962), Posture and Figure Control through Physical Education (1965), and Gymnastics for Women (1964). Drury collaborated with Associate Professor of Physical Education Andrea Schmid and Associate Professor of Physical Education Adelia Spangenberg to produce a teaching record related to gymnastics and posture education for neurodivergent students with Hoctor Dance Records in 1967. Spangenberg composed, arranged, and played the music on the recording. Drury retired in 1972. She died on November 27, 1994.
