Leo H. Chen, 1961. Professor of Foreign Languages. BA (1943) National Northeastern University, China; LLD (1969) South China University; Charter Member International University, Hong Kong; advanced study University of Toronto and University of California, Berkeley. Chen and Kai-yu Hsu co-created the university’s programs in Asian languages. Chen was a calligrapher, artist, and composer who sponsored the first student association for Chinese students. He directed the American Student Summer Camp in Beijing, China and co-directed the United States/China Business Institute in San Francisco State University’s College of Business. Chen was known for introducing Chinese culture into American media as the “Father of Chinese Television in America.” He coordinated Chinese and Japanese academic programs.
